The BTO Kitchen Cabinet Design Guide: Work Triangle, Countertops & Hardware

Avoid the common BTO kitchen mistakes — work triangle, countertops, hardware and ventilation explained.

The kitchen is where BTO owners most often overspend — and most often regret it later. Most of these pitfalls can be avoided at the design stage.

Five things to get right

  1. Work triangle: keep sink, hob and fridge within easy reach. A U-shape suits most 4-room kitchens.
  2. Countertop upstand: a quartz upstand around 9 cm keeps splashes off the wall and is easy to clean.
  3. Pull-out baskets vs. bins: baskets trap dirt in corners and rust over time; many owners prefer removable, washable bins.
  4. Door sizes: don’t oversize doors — size them to how you actually reach in.
  5. Ventilation holes: shoe cabinets, DB boxes and appliance cabinets all need airflow.
